The threat is increasing for major impacts for Florida into South Carolina and North Carolina. Further north, the threat is decreasing as support is building for a more eastward movement offshore once at North Carolina's latitude. However, given the complex pattern, we advise those north of NC to keep an eye on Hurricane Matthew. Right now we have two main tracks being highlighted by guidance. The GFS Ensembles highlight this well with a group of "L's" north and east of the mean and a group south and west. The group south and west is outnumbered but gained the support of two global models ECMWF and the UKMET. This is concerning because this would place most of the Florida coastline in the path of some heavy rain and strong damaging winds. If the track further offshore pans out then the impacts could be minimal with the strongest winds and rain staying offshore. Given that the ECMWF model is handling the complex features the best, this is building the case for Matthew to come very close to if not into Florida. ECMWF is pictured below for Friday at 2am EDT. Impacts include heavy rain with a swath of 5-10" possible along the coast of Florida, with more in SC /NC as the Hurricane slows down. The exact track will determine the wind strength. Right now it appears likely this will be a major hurricane as it comes close/possible makes landfall.
